Applied Technology to Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls

® is a system to build modular retaining walls that allows for space, time and investment savings. The shoes, columns or beams are substituted by internally reinforced elements in the embankment that eliminates the pressure giving consistency to the earth fill permitting thus its stabilization.

The great efficiency of the ® System is derived from the fact that: •Its components are simple and easy to manufacture. •The optimization of its erection given the creative form of its slabs and the industrial engineering techniques application. •Its security that guarantees the steel galvanized tension hooks. •The unique flexibility of its anchorage elements. The useful life of this system and its other specifications surpass the requirements by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and of the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for this type of products. The applications are extensive and varied. For example: Retaining walls for ramps of overpasses, for roads or highway slopes, for grains or mineral open storage, for stabilization of slopes, for leveling or improvement of lands, for abutmets of bridges, etc. The ® System has made the conventional retaining walls obsolete for this type of applications. The ® System is the result of exhaustive tests of field and of laboratory, as well as sophisticated calculations of engineering that have been supported by prestigious universities.

® System was develped to build Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls. This based on simbiont sustentation of its elements and in the use of fricction on its anchors and the compacted ground.It consists of three stages: Engineering, manufacturing and construction.

Engineering: PLANOBRA obtains the necessary information from the customer, so that it may be fed into the computerprograms designed to obtain the values of the physical specifications of the structural elements that should be used for a given project.

The variables are as follow :

1. For concrete slabs, the number of tension hooks.
2. For tension hooks, the lenght and transversal section.
3. For the anchorage elements, the width, lenght and distance between their horizontal planes.

All this variables are determined for each segment of the earthen formation in such a way that the slabs are classified with specific codes in order to identify the specifications of the structural elements. When this variables have been calculated, construction plans are developed, wich include, aside from the identification of the slabs, all the construction details, clearly indicating the placement of each of the different components of the ® system, as well as their number, dimensions, levels and supplementary information. In addition to the construction plans, thecustomer also recieves a manual with step-by-step instructions, specifications, and general recommendations to facilitate te job.

Manufacturing: the so called structural elements: grids, omega anchors, tension hooks, safety catches, union flats and anchorage elements wich form the core of the system, are manufactured in plant with the most modern up-to-date equipment and methods, highest qualified personnel and strictest standards of quality. The manufacturing of the tension hooks, the weaving of the PVC-coated steel wire for anchorage elements, the hot-dip galvanization of the metal fittings and other minor processes are monitored by technical experts in each area, in order to insure a product of optimum quality.

In addition, the concrete slabs may cast in prefabricating plants or on the construction site itself. PLANOBRA provides the molds and tools for handling the slabs.

Construction: The ® system is extremely easy to assemble since it was designed to save time in both equipment and labor.

The unique male-female characteristics of the edges of the slabs, wich facilitate retention, as well as the convenience of its structural elements, do not require the use of any special tools or a stock of bolts and screws, thus making assembly surprisingly effortless.The components are light and can be handled without risk to a single worker.

With respect to the assembly there are only a few, simple points that must be kept under control. In addition to the routine controls for any similar construction process, special attention must be given to the backfill specifications, the verticality of the slabs and the compactation levels.

In this way, ® simplifies and lowers the costs of constructing retaining walls, wich may be used for overpass ramps, hillside embankments, unstable slopes, bridge abutmnets, etc.
